Move of the month

This month we trained the Side-flip as our move of the month! This movement was really challenging, both mentally and physically for all ages and sizes. The Side-flip is one of the easier flips but it still takes a lot of time to get it right and to land even your first one, but we started that process this month.

The Side-flip challenged students to push through mental barriers, blocking them from taking their feet over their head and jumping from heights. We are super proud of each and every student that gave this motion a go and trained it throughout the month!

Academy Principles

We take immense pride in the dedication and hard work invested in every single class. Our coaches undergo thorough training and implement a strategic range of principles. We steadfastly adhere to our principles, which serve as a compass to guide coaches and empower students on a daily basis.

Honour

The need for this principle cannot be explained as the word honour has been lost in our time. This is why the term respect is used as it is the closest to honour. There is a difference between honour and respect. Honour is the quality of knowing and doing what is morally right. Although this is what honour is defined as, it has a more nuanced definition; “we honour because we realise that the value of that one individual is enough for Jesus to die for them”. Respect falls under honouring a person by being polite to them. To respect a person for just being a person can do much in terms of forming a lasting and mutually satisfying relationship.

Who to honour/ respect? You should honour everyone around us. For specificity sake, there are five categories of people that you will always work with, either at this academy or in the professional world. The first category is yourself; you need to honour what you believe and not compromise on your morals and values. The second category of honour and respect is the people beneath, which would be the students in this case. You owe them enough to respect them as a person and as a fellow Traceur. The third category is the people above you. This implies understanding and respecting that they are there because they display that they are capable of being a good coach. Respect means not judging based on what you see and not concluding things about others working above you or around you. The fourth category is to honour the others who work with you on the same level. They are there to support you. The final category is that of respecting any outsiders who may enter into our academy either for observation or any temporary means and even other staff who may not be directly involved with you.

Why?

If you expect respect, you have got to be willing to give it first. It is important to realise that respect is only giving to a certain extent and then from there, it is earned. This is relevant to you as a coach as you are in an environment that deals with people. You become a role model that many will look up to, they will be watching if you can respect before they will reciprocate.

How to measure Honour:

1: How is my attendance - is it poor/often/always?

2: How is my punctuality - am I always early/on time/late?

3: How am I speaking about my coach - negative/neutral/positive?

4: How often do I pray for my coach - Seldom/often/always?

5: When my coach is teaching how am I receiving - Am I preoccupied/paying attention/ leaning in and responding?

6: When he needs my help - do I always have excuses/ only help when asked/always finding ways to help?

Benefits of Parkour

There are many benefits and invaluable skills that we encourage during each and every class, which form part of our dedicated program.

As we share specific benefits and skills with you, we aim to provide comprehensive insights into their essence and showcase how our Academy integrates these benefits into our students, structure, and environment.

Participants in parkour are often required to make quick thinking and split-second decisions regarding a current or next movement. To successfully perform a task and sequence of movements, participants are taught to make logical and calculated decisions on the spot in order to perform a successful task. By continuously training these movements and progressions, the base reaction times and accuracy of the athletes are increased allowing the participants to trust their own instincts and decision making in their everyday lives.

Investing in our leaders

We are proud to introduce our leaders Bernard, Lucius and Jadon.

We embarked on this leadership journey in September 2022. We had monthly sessions and holiday camps throughout the year. During this time we have learned to understand what leadership is, how everybody can be an influencer along with the vision and principles of the Academy .

We are currently busy with a two week leaders camp during the holiday. In last weeks sessions, we have been taught and gained much insight on honour, value and tools to measure and improve on these subjects.

They also had some down time. The leaders went for a hike and spent some time in the park.

Wow. Look at him go!

Such perfect form.

Our leaders loves serving to improve the Academy.

This week we are delving into authority and what it entails. We are expectant for the upcoming sessions the senior coaches will be sharing with us and the activities awaiting us as well.

Birthdays

We wish Bernard a very happy birthday and a blessed year filled with many more adventures and parkour! We look forward to your growth here with us!

Children’s physical activity decreases during school holidays. Less structured days and reduced participation in organized activities may account for some of the decrease. Little is known about the factors that influence parents’ decision to enroll their child in organized activity such as holiday clubs. This paper sought to explore parents’ perceptions of their child’s physical activity during school holidays and the factors that influence holiday activity-based decision making.

Semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted with 42 parents of children aged 10–11 years in July 2017 or March 2018. Data were analyzed using a combination of inductive and deductive content analysis to explore parents’ perceptions of holiday-based physical activity and the factors associated with how they provide physical activity opportunities for their children. The data revealed that most parents consider their child’s physical activity levels when planning for the school holidays. However, work commitments in the holidays meant many parents had to rely on both informal and formal childcare. Grandparents were the primary source of informal childcare, despite a perception that children were not as physically active when with them. Holiday clubs were also a viable option, but the cost, location and age-appropriateness of provision inhibit parents signing older children up to these regularly.
